Our Story
Chunky Monkey can be found in the very heart of beautiful Devon. The company was the inspired idea, 8 years ago, of husband and wife team Nigel and Jackie Plowman.
Nigel who for over 20 years worked in the demolition and reclamation industry spotted a real niche in the market for quality, bespoke furniture exclusively made of reclaimed and sustainably sourced timber.
Like lots of people, they are flat out running their business - living, sleeping and breathing it - whilst looking after their young and lively family - Poppy, Lilly, Tallulah, Solomon and Jeffrey the Jack Russell.

We are very lucky to have a dedicated team of skilled craftsmen who are committed to keeping time-honoured skills alive and who join us in being inspired by British heritage and being passionate about preserving the wood used and therefore preserving the history of the wood.

Award Winning
We were delighted to be among the winners at the 2013 Devon Environmental Business Initiative (DEBI) Awards picking up the award for Green Manufacturing.
We were also delighted to be chosen as winner of the Environmental Award at the 2012 Express & Echo Business Awards.
We Love Green
We are proud to specialise in furniture made from reclaimed wood which has been sourced in Britain, turning it into stunning and unique pieces full of character and charm.
The vintage wood that is used in the reclaimed range is as individual as we are with its natural imperfections and its own unique and beautiful natural grain.
The furniture is not the only green part of the business. Our home, workshop, showroom and water supply are heated solely by wood burners fed on the off-cuts of wood from the workshop. The only waste produced is the wood ends, shavings and sawdust. The shavings are sold to local stables and farmers to be used as animal bedding, the sawdust is collected by local schools to compost and the wood ends are sold to the general public for firewood.

At Chunky Monkey we are passionate about the environment and have enjoyed visits from a number of local schools where the children have had lots of fun learning about recycling, up-cycling and reclamation.
